HANSON _ In hospital on 18 April, 2000, after several months of declining health, Laurence Clarion Hanson, in his 95th year, was born 5 April 1906 in San Jose, California. He was the eldest of two children of Charles Peter Hanson and Gertrude Besteland and is survived by his son Bradley; his grandson Charles Fredrik and his sister Ella Sutherland. He came to Canada in the spring of 1910 with his sister and parents, settling on a homestead south of Maple Creek near the Cypress Hills region of Saskatchewan. After the death of his mother in May 1917, the family moved back to the United States, with several years spent in California. In 1922, the family returned to Saskatchewan to resume farming, during which time Laurence Hanson seriously began to pursue his interest in art. In 1930, he moved to Vancouver to develop further his talents and to seek employment in commercial art, joining Neon Products in 1931 and remaining with the company until he retired in 1971. During his early years in Vancouver, he studied at the Vancouver School of Art with the Group of Seven artist, Frederick Varley and in the years since, he has produced numerous landscapes and portraits. With respect to his commercial art, many of his neon-sign designs have appeared throughout Vancouver, a contribution that made the city one of the most brightly lit in Canada. Notable examples that remain are the Orpheum Theatre, the Hotel Niagara and the Aristocratic cafes. In 1932, he was married to Eleonora Kjeldgaard, who passed away in 1996, a daughter of Paul Kjeldgaard and Mette Christensen. In keeping with his expressed wish, there will be no funeral service, but following interment, a reception will be held for members of the family.
