- Sven Thirud
Feb. 25, 1927-Feb. 7, 2004
SIDNEY, Mont. - Sven Thirud, 76, of Sidney, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004, at his home, following a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer.
Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, at the Lonsdale United Methodist Church in Sidney with Pastor Susan Twidwell officiating. Cremation has taken place.
Sven Thirud was born Feb. 25, 1927, at Alexander, to Fredrick and Ingrid (Graff) Thirud. He grew up on the family farm three miles south of Alexander and attended school.
Before his sophomore year, he moved to Englewood, Calif., and finished high school. While in high school he played football in the Rose Bowl and worked at Douglas Aircraft (with Rosie the Riveter). Sven joined the United States Navy and was stationed in the South Pacific until his discharge in 1946.
Some of his many occupations included brick layer, neon light installer and oil field worker. After his father's death, Sven returned to Alexander to help his brother, Ed, run the family farm.
On a blind date in 1951, he met the love of his life, Jean Price of Williston. Sven purchased the Thirud family farm in the summer of 1953, and he and Jean were united in marriage on Nov. 15, 1953. They ran the farm and spent their winters in Williston, where Sven became a salesman for Gaffaney's Office Machines.
In 1957, Sven moved his family to Sidney and shortly after, purchased the family home. He started Thirud Office Supply Inc. in 1963. In 1980, the business outgrew its original location and he moved it to a larger building. Sven earned his pilot's license and often flew to customers in remote areas. In early 1996, after more than 30 successful years in the office supply business, he sold Thirud Office Supply Inc. to RJD Inc.
Sven enjoyed life and lived it to the fullest. He built his own sailboat and taught himself how to sail. His love of golf is legendary. He was even able to attend The Masters by flying 'standby' all the way to Augusta.
Sven became an avid gardener and was very proud of his grapes and fruit trees. He and Jean loved to travel and did so extensively in their 50 years together.
He was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. His cheery 'hellos,' beaming smiles, trademark wild eyebrows and big bear hugs will be greatly missed. His family loves him dearly and he will forever live in their hearts.
Sven is survived by his wife, Jean, of Sidney; his son, Mark and his wife, Barbie, of Billings; two daughters, Daun Wick and her husband, Kenny, of Anaconda, and Lisa Lucas and her husband, J.F., of Simponsville, S.C., six grandchildren, Wendy Fisher and her husband, Steve, of Great Falls, Kimberly Wick of Huntsville, Ala., Josh and Ty, both of Billings and McKenzie and Dalton, both of Simponsville; two great-grandchildren, Austin and Rylen, of Great Falls, four sisters, Amy Hagberry and her husband, Frank, of Cody, Wyo, Joan Orr and her husband, Bob, of Riverside, Calif., Ruth Sands and her husband, Cap, of San Diego, Calif., and Lee Morgan and her husband, Bob, of Cody; and numerous nieces and nephews.
