Nellie Melby Obiturary

Mrs. Nellie Melby, Well Known Cafe Owner, Passes
Had Successfully Conducted Hotel
Business at Thunder Hawk and
Restaurants here

Residents of Lemmon and cicinity
were saddened Friday when death
claimed Mrs. Nellie Melby, proprietor
of Melby's Cafe, and for many years
a resident and business woman in
this city, at her home at 5:45 o'clock
p.m. that day. Death was due to a
heart attack suffered earlier in the
day. She had been ill and confined
to her home the past three weeks,
her condition becoming critical Friday
morning and death ensued in the
afternoon.
Nellie Oakland was born at Bergen,
Norway, on January 30, 1890, the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hans Nels
Oakland. She spent her early childhood
and recieved her education in
that country.
In her twenties, Mrs. Melby
and one brother, Hans Nelson, emmigrated
to the United States, the
former locationg at Madison, S.D.,
where she had employment in a hotel,
and the latter remaining at Clarksville,
Minn., where he resided up until
five or six years ago when he
moved to Minneapolis, same state.
Deceased came to Lemmon from
Madison in 1913 and during that year
was united in marriage in this city to
Sam Melby, to chich union was born
two sons. Mr. and Mrs. Melby and
family, after living here a few years,
filed on a homestead southeast of
Thunder Hawk where they made their
home until the former's health failed.
In July, 1927, the Melby family moved
to the village of Thunder Hawk where
Mrs. Melby conducted a hotel and
restaurant for a year or more. Mr. Melby
preceded his wife in death at
Thunder Hawk during that year, his
passing due to canceer.
Discontinuing the business in that
village, Mrs. Melby and two sons
moved to Lemmon about seven years
ago since which time deceased had
operated cafe's and restaurants.
Left to mourn her passing are two
sons, Harold 20, and Kenneth, 18;
one brother, Hans Nelson of
Minneapolis, Minn., and two sisters and
one brother in Norway.
A large concourse of sorrowing
friends gathered at the American
Lutheran church in this city Tuesday
afternoon at 2 o'clock to pay their
last tribute to the departed. The Rev.
Holm of Strool officiated at the final
rites. Her body was laid to rest. in
Greenhill cemetery.
Pall bearers wer: O.T. Finand.
H.A. Kelm, Olaf Olson, John Kvale,
Norman Fogel and Otto Rodenbour.
Those from a distance who attended
the funeral services were: Rudolph
Nelson, a nephew of the deceseasd;
and Hans Oakland of Clarksville,
Minn., a cousin.
