He served in World War I. After his discharge he was in the national guard. After World War II started, he was told he was too old to serve in the war.
Engineer 1) for the Soo Line Railroad 2). He retired in 1951. He and his wife (Rose RLadd) travelled many years, three to six months, each year until he got sick.
He was an engineer on the Freedom Train 3) April 26, 1947 from Bismarck to Jamestown, then another engineer took over for the next portion of the trip. The train travelled to all 48 states. It was painted red, white and blue; it was in the honor of the Bicentennial American.
He wore a three piece suit, plus a pocket watch, under his coverall's and jacket. Shined his shoes every week. I ( daughter Donna Schlener) rode with him many times on the engines, from the depot to the roundhouse. Then we would walk home together.
He wore a hat whenever he left the house. Also had a cigar in his mouth or in his hand. Also a couple in his pocket. He smoked a pipe, from the several he had, between cigars. He was a smart dresser.
He loved his coffee, strong, hot or cold. The coffee pot was always on the stove.
We always tried to get back to Bismarck, so he and Julie could celebrate their birthdays. Dad's was July 1st and Julie's July 2nd.
He never told me much about his family in Norway. I do have a picture of his mom, plus one of the family. No date on it. His brothers look to be about 8 or 9 and 10 or 11.
He liked to play cards.
He was appointed to the Selective Board. He signed the draft cards for the men going into service. He belonged to the Veteran's of Foreign War, American Legion, Elka (?), 32 Degree Masons.
